Newark Bears News Release

(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 21, 2010) - The Long Island Ducks defeated the Newark Bears 3-0 on Saturday night at Suffolk County Sports Park in Central Islip, New York.

For the second straight night, pitching was the story as Derek Blacksher and Daryl Harang matched up. Blacksher set down the first five batters he faced with Harang surrendering two hits over his first five innings, while retiring nine straight at one point.

The Ducks notched the scoreboard in the second inning. Matt Padgett doubled with two outs followed by a Matt Esquivel walk. Matt Cavagnaro dropped a RBI single into center field to bring in Padgett and it was 1-0. In the third inning, Robinson Cancel drilled a solo shot over the scoreboard in left to extend the lead to two runs.

Blacksher settled down and scattered just three more hits over his next two frames and stranded four Ducks' runners. Reliever Brian "Doc" Holliday provided strong relief early for Newark as he allowed just one hit and a walk in his first two innings and was aided by a double play. Long Island timed Holliday in the eighth collecting three straight hits with an Esquivel RBI single putting across the third run of the game. Greg Reinhard retired the side and helped start a 1-6-3 inning ending double play.

Newark threatened in ninth as pinch hitter Eric Munson drew a two-out walk and James Cooper, who finished 2-for-4, ripped a double into to center to put the tying run at the plate. Closer Ricardo Gomez got pinch hitter Manny Mejia to fly out to right.

Harang (3-2) got the win, firing seven innings of four hits baseball, with four strikeouts and two walks. Blacksher (1-3) was dealt the loss, allowing two runs on six hits, while striking out one and walking three. Gomez recorded his ninth save of the season for Long Island.
