
Patriots Take Game One to End the Blue Crabs' Winning Streak

(Waldorf MD)--- Two first place teams in their respective divisions did battle tonight at Regency Furniture Stadium, and the 4,217 were treated to extra innings baseball.
Somerset came in on a four game winning streak. They got the scoring started first in the top third. Robert Andino singled to left field. James Skelton would then single to left to put runners at first and third. Jonny Tucker would drive in Andino with a fielder's choice to make it 1-0. In the top of the fourth Thomas Neal would double to left field. Chris Marrero would trade places with Neal with an RBI Double to make it 2-0.
The Patriots would add a run in the top seventh and eighth to make it 3-0. In the bottom of the seventh, Casey Stevenson would single to center field who then advance to second on a wild pitch. Casey Frawley would then drive in Stevenson with an RBI Single. In the bottom of the eighth, Cyle Hankerd would homer for the second straight game over the mini monster in left to make it 4-2.
In the bottom of the ninth, with closer Jon Hunton on the mound for Somerset, Daryle Ward would lead off with a single to right. Jamar Walton would then pinch run for Ward. Fred Lewis would chop a single into center field to score Walton to make it a one run game. Casey Stevenson would single to center to put runners at first and second. Two batters later, Antone DeJesus would bloop a single to left to score Lewis to tie the game at 4-4.
Somerset would retake the lead in the Top of the 12th. With Erik Hamren out of the bullpen to pitch for Southern Maryland, David Vidal would walk. Nate Spears would then single to first. Two batter later with runners at first and second James Skelton would hit a groundball single in the hole past the diving second baseman Stevenson allowing Vidal to score to make it 5-4.
In the bottom of the 12th, with Casey Frawley at third, and Zach Wilson at the plate, Zach would hit a groundball to deep short, and leg it out for an infield single to allow Frawley to score from third to once again tie the game, this time at 5-5.
Somerset would finally hold a lead though, as Thomas Neal would lead things off in the top of the 13th, and on the first pitch that he sees, drive one over the wall in left for a solo homerun. The next hitter Chris Marrero would then homer over the wall in left field to make it back to back and give the Patriots a 7-5 lead and the eventual victory in thirteen innings.
The Blue Crabs drop to 13-8, and see their eight game losing streak snapped. Somerset, with their win ties the Blue Crabs for the most wins in the Atlantic League with 13. Game two of the four game set tomorrow evening set for 6:35 P.M. LHP Matt Zielinski (0-0, 1.01) will start for Somerset, while RHP Brian Grening (1-0, 5.19) will throw for the Blue Crabs.
