Somerset Patriots News Release
Bridgewater, New Jersey - The Somerset Patriots (20-8) swept the Reading Fightin Phils (5-24) 7-2 and 6-1 at TD Bank Ballpark on Saturday night.
Somerset's bats were the story early in the first game. Trailing 1-0, Dermis Garcia hit a no-doubt two-run homer (10) to left field to grab the lead in the first.
The next inning, Oliver Dunn (2) and Aaron Palensky (1) each went deep to put the Patriots comfortably ahead 5-1. It was Palensky's first professional home run.
Jorge Bonifacio (4) joined the home run parade to make it a 5-2 ballgame before Max Burt's two-run double in the bottom of the third closed out the scoring.
Shawn Semple (W, 1-2) allowed two runs on four hits in five innings for the win. New York Yankees left-handed reliever Zack Britton relieved Semple and pitched a scoreless inning with two strikeouts.
"I felt pretty good today," said Britton after the game. "Coming out of the bullpen helped. I was able to get my routine going. I haven't done that in a while. I felt a little more in sync today. My delivery was more under control and my timing was better."
Ethan Lindow (L, 0-2) took the loss after he allowed five earned runs on six hits in two innings.
Matt Krook (W, 1-0) was unhittable in his five innings of work and added eight strikeouts in his game two start. The win was his first of the 2021 season.
The Patriots offense continued to roll when an RBI triple by Michael Beltre got the scoring started in the third inning.
Dunn cleared the bases with a three-run double, and Beltre added another on an RBI single, before a fifth run scored on a fielding error in the fourth inning that broke open a 6-0 lead.
"I was just looking for pitches I could drive over the middle of the plate and I got some today and I hit them," said Dunn in the postgame press conference. "It just felt good to help the team win."
Reading's run came on an RBI groundout by Bonifacio in the top of the sixth inning.
Franciso Morales (L 0-5) took the loss with five earned runs on three hits in 3.2 innings pitched.
The Patriots and the Fightin Phils conclude the series at TD Bank Ballpark with a 1:05 pm game on Sunday afternoon.
