Bridgewater, NJ - The Somerset Patriots shut out the Pennsylvania Road Warriors 1-0 before 4,893 fans at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Saturday evening.
The Patriots took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Center fielder Norm Hutchins reached on an error and scored on an RBI groundout by shortstop Jhonny Perez.
Patriots starter Cam Smith (5-3) picked up the win with seven scoreless innings pitched, allowing four hits and nine strikeouts. Pennsylvania starter Dan Mozingo (2-2) suffered the loss, allowing a run on two hits in six innings pitched. Patriots reliever Robert Marquez earned his fifth save of the season with two scoreless innings pitched and four strikeouts.
The two teams combined for eight total hits in the game, five by Pennsylvania and three by the Patriots.
The game was the fourth time Smith had nine or more strikeouts in a game for Somerset. He struck out ten in his first outing of the season and then followed it up with a team season high 11 strikeout game.
The win makes the Patriots 6-3 in shut outs this season and the team improved to a perfect 42-0 when leading after the seventh inning.
The 2004 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home with a 1:35 pm game against the Pennsylvania Road Warriors on Sunday afternoon. Sunday's game includes Pennants for the first 2,000 fans courtesy of Autumn Woods. It will also be Beatles Day with a live concert by Revolver before and after the game.
