(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 21, 2004) â The Long Island Ducks dropped a 5-4 decision to the Nashua Pride on Saturday evening before a crowd of 6,113 at Citibank Park. With the loss, the Ducks record now stands at 14-21 in the season's second half.
The star of the back-and-forth battle was none other than former major-league All-Star and current Nashua first baseman, Dante Bichette. After flying out in the first, Bichette reached safely in each of his next three plate appearances. Following a single to center in the third, Bichette homered in each of his next two at bats. The first long ball came off starter Kevin Sheredy in the fifth, but the shot that did the most damage was his solo shot off reliever Joe Cotton in the eighth that broke a 4-4 tie. On the evening, Bichette finished 3-for-4 with two home runs, two runs scored, three RBI and a stolen base.
Cotton (3-1) was charged with the loss, his first of the year, while Sheredy received a no-decision after allowing three earned runs on five hits and two walks in five innings of work. Terry Pearson (1-0) got the win after tossing two scoreless innings of relief. Jeff Sparks earned his sixth save of the season after posting a scoreless ninth.
The Ducks and Pride meet in the rubber match of their three game set on Sunday afternoon at Citibank Park for the. First pitch is slated for 1:35 p.m. in a contest that will be broadcast live by WLIE Radio (540-AM) with Chris King and Mike Graham describing all the action from Central Islip. Duck Tales: Doug Jennings left the game in the eighth inning with a shoulder injury after colliding with the Oaktree Dairy sign on the first base line...Jennings is being further evaluated and is currently listed as day-to-day...Jennings has reached base safely in 35 straight home games...Kimera Bartee has reached base safely in 20 straight home games...Kevin Baez extended his hitting streak to 12 games...All seven hits for the Ducks were singles...Tonight's sellout crowd of 6,113 was the 32nd consecutive and 45th sellout of the season, which brings the grand total to 2,082,669 fans who have now enjoyed Ducks baseball at Citibank Park since April of 2000.
