Newark Bears News Release

NEWARK, NJ, August 21—Shortstop Jerson Perez led off the bottom half of the 13th inning with a home run off of right-hander Ryan Schurman as the Newark Bears defeated the Bridgeport Bluefish, 4-3, Saturday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The Bears have now won five games in a row and 8 of their last 9.

Perez worked the count full leading off in the 13th inning and then drove Schurman's payoff pitch over the wall in right-center field for the game-winning shot. The home run was his 7th of the season and it marked the Bears second walkoff blast this season. Perez finished the night 2-5 at the plate for Newark.

The Bluefish forced extra innings by tying the game in the top half of the 9th inning. Trailing 3-2 Bridgeport tied the game with two outs when Eddie Lara scampered home from 3rd base on catcher Sandy DeLeon's passed ball.

Both teams received terrific pitching on the night. Newark starter Joe Gannon allowed only two earned runs and three hits in eight innings of work. Teammate Travis Wade tossed three scoreless frames before Cliff Foster (6-4) earned the victory by throwing two shutout innings.

Bridgeport starter Tim Cain failed in his bid for his 12th win of the season, but pitched very well despite the no-decision. Cain allowed three runs and seven hits over eight innings. Reliever Terrance Hill did not allow a run or a hit in three innings. Hill pitched out of a bases loaded, two out jam in the 11th inning when he induced pinch-hitter Jason Dewey to ground out to second base for the final out.

Newark's Jose Olmeda went 2-4 with a solo home run (his 8th) and an RBI double. Chris Jones hit a solo home run in the 4th inning, his 11th of the season and 4th in the past four games.

The Bears and Bluefish play the finale of their three-game set Sunday afternoon at The Den beginning at 1:35 PM. Right-hander Clint Smith (6-7) makes the start for the Bears on Sunday.
