Patriots Score Two In The Ninth To Win 4-3

BRIDGEPORT, CT- The Somerset Patriots defeated the Bridgeport Bluefish 4-3 at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Thursday evening.

The Patriots rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth inning to come from behind and take a 4-3 lead. Centerfielder Sean Smith led off with a single up the middle and stole second with one out. After third baseman Jeff Nettles drew a two out walk, second baseman Matt Hagen lined an RBI single to left that scored Smith to tie the game and then Nettles scampered home on a Bluefish throwing error to give the Patriots the lead.

Bridgeport struck first with three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 3-0 lead when third baseman Luis Lopez hit a two out single to right and after a walk by leftfielder Brandon Sing, shortstop Ed Rogers followed with a three run home run to left (1).

Somerset got on the board with a run in the top of the fifth inning to make it 3-1 when Smith drew a lead off walk, advanced to second on a walk by rightfielder Elliott Ayala and came home on a one out RBI groundout to short by Nettles.

The Patriots scored a run in the top of the eighth inning to cut the Bluefish lead to 3-2 when Nettles drew a lead off walk, moved to second on a single to right by Hagen and after a walk by shortstop Teuris Olivares, scored on a one out RBI fielder's choice to third by leftfielder Jon Nelson.

Patriots' starter Jim Magrane (4-0) picked up the win, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out eight and walking three in eight innings of work. Bluefish reliever Rick Asadoorian (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits while walking two and striking one in one inning pitched. Patriots' closer Travis Minix pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his eighth save of the season.

With the win the Patriots improved to 19-12 on the 2009 season while the Bluefish dropped to 11-21.
