Bears Beat Patriots 3-2 In Pitchers' Duel

NEWARK, NJ- The Newark Bears defeated the Somerset Patriots 3-2 at Bears' and Eagles' Riverfront Stadium on Friday evening.

The Patriots broke a scoreless tie with a run in the top of the sixth inning to take a 1-0 lead when catcher Travis Anderson drew a two out bases loaded walk. Somerset loaded the bases on a one out walk by first baseman Josh Pressley, a single to center by third baseman Jeff Nettles and a single to left by second baseman Matt Hagen.

The Bears answered with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 3-1 lead when first baseman Rob Mackowiak hit a lead off infield single to short, moved to second on a one out single to left by third baseman Michael Sandoval and scored on a three run home run to center by catcher Saloman Manriquez (1).

Somerset scored their final run in the top of the eighth inning to cut the Bears lead to 3-2 when Nettles led off with a double to left center, moved to third on a single to right by Hagen and scored on an RBI single to center by designated hitter Teuris Olivares.

Bears' starter Shawn Chacon (2-1) picked up the win, allowing one run on six hits while striking out eight and walking three in seven innings of work. Patriots' starter Kip Bouknight (3-2) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits while walking none and striking out five in seven innings pitched. Bears' closer Armando Benitez pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save of the season.

With the loss the Patriots dropped to 19-13 on the 2009 season while the Bears improved to 19-13.
