The Newark Bears defeated the Somerset Patriots 3-2 in their first of a four game series at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
Shawn Chacon recorded his second win of the season after pitching an impressive seven innings, only allowing one earned run with eight strikeouts. Armando Benitez recorded the save, his first of the season. The Bears put their runs on the board after Salomon Manriquez crushed a three run homer in the seventh inning. Ramon Nivar stole his fifth base of the season.
Somerset's Kip Bouknight pitched a notable seven innings. Jeff Nettles scored for the Patriots in the eighth inning after doubling to center field.
The Bears face the Patriots tomorrow for an exciting double header, both teams sharing the best record in the Freedom Division at 19-13. The first game starts at 4:05pm - tickets can be purchased by calling 1-888-85-Bears or by visiting www.newarkbears.com.
