Central Islip, NY - In one of the most impressive starts of his career, Mark Diapoules allowed just three hits and the Long Island Ducks defeated the Somerset Patriots 8-2 on Saturday night at Bethpage Ballpark.

Diapoules (3-1) tossed his longest outing of the year, going 7.0 innings without a walk, striking out four. The righty allowed a Michael Hernandez single in the 1st, a Fernando Cortez single in the 4th, and a Josh Pressley two-run shot two batters later. Those would be the only two runs of the night for the Patriots and they would not get another hit against the league's best pitching staff the rest of the way. Diapoules retired the next and final 11 men he faced. Matt Hagen walked to start the 8th but was retired on a double play against Bubbie Buzachero while Dave Williams tossed a perfect 9th. Ducks pitching sent down 16 of the final 17 Patriots.

Meanwhile, Derell McCall took the ball against Long Island and got into an early hole. JR House knocked a two-run double to cap a three-run 1st and a couple of Cortez errors would come back to hurt Somerset. A miscue with two outs in the 3rd allowed House to reach before Freddie Thon cranked a two-run homer to right putting Long Island up 5-0. Another unearned run off a Cortez error scored in the 4th to give the Ducks a 6-2 advantage. McCall (2-4) went 6.0 innings, surprisingly enough tallying a quality start with six runs, three earned against him. McCall's biggest issue was control as he walked a Patriot season-high seven batters.

Somerset (25-36) and Long Island (39-22) close out the first half of the 2011 Atlantic League season with a pair of 7-inning doubleheader contests. Kevin Reese (2-2, 6.49) squares off with Ruddy Lugo (2-1, 6.25) in game one while Jason Cromer (2-2, 2.86) and Chris McCoy (1-0, 3.38) will start game two with the bullpens scheduled to toss most of the innings in the nightcap. Coverage begins at 5:00 pm on 1450 WCTC-AM and www.wctcam.com.
