Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
Camden, NJ - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs first doubleheader of the season ended in a split as the Blue Crabs cruised over the Riversharks in
game one 11-1, before falling in game two 4-2 at Campbell's Field in Camden, NJ.
Game one was all Southern Maryland as the Blue Crabs got a solo homer from second baseman Casey Benjamin (8), his seventh in 11 games, to
take a 1-0 lead.
Camden bounced back to tie the game in the bottom of the first on a sac fly from third baseman Danny Richar. But the Blue Crabs picked up four
runs in the third to take control of the game. A throwing error from Camden starting pitcher J.R. Mathes on a sac bunt attempt by Benjamin
allowed two runs to score and give Southern Maryland a 3-1 lead. Shortstop Yunesky Sanchez followed that with an RBI double, before an RBI
triple from centerfielder Brian Barton gave the Blue Crabs a 5-1 advantage.
The Blue Crabs added to the lead with two runs in the sixth on a two-run double from catcher Christian Lopez, which was followed by a three-run
seventh in which Southern Maryland got a two-run double from first baseman Tanner Townsend and a sac fly from Lopez for the final tally of 11-1.
Lopez led the way with a 1-3 effort with a double, sac fly, and three RBI, while Barton chipped in with a 2-4 effort as he doubled, tripled and drove
in a run. Camden got two hits apiece from centerfielder Jonel Pacheco, shortstop Lloyd Turner, and right fielder Ruddy Yan.
On the mound, starter Virgil Vasquez was in complete control as he allowed only one run in six innings, while giving up six hits, walking none, and
striking out three. He got the win to move to move to 4-5 on the season. Mathes (1-3) suffered the loss after allowing seven runs in six innings of
work.
Game two was another story as Camden starter Carlos Vasquez allowed one earned run in six innings, while walking two and striking out three in
the Riversharks' 4-2 win.
Again, Southern Maryland scored in the first as Benjamin tripled then scored on a passed ball from Camden catcher to give the Blue Crabs a 1-0
lead.
The Riversharks responded in the bottom of the first on an RBI double from Richar, before the Blue Crabs retook the lead in the second on a leadoff
homer by Barton (2). Camden, however, took the lead for good with a two-run bottom of the second. Yan reached second on a fielding error from
Sanchez to begin the inning before scoring on an RBI single from second baseman Juan Francia to tie the game at two. Francia would then steal
second and third base before scoring on an RBI groundout from centerfielder Jonel Pacheco to take a 3-2 lead.
Camden added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI double from Colina to make the score 4-2.
Southern Maryland had several chances to tie the game, but left six runners on base in innings 3-6 including the bases loaded in the third. The Blue
Crabs got two hits apiece from Benjamin and Sanchez in game two, while Camden also had two hits from Turner, Francia and Richar.
Turner went a combined 4-6 for the doubleheader with all four hits being singles.
Vasquez (4-3) got win, while Southern Maryland starter Nick Green (5-3) suffered the loss after allowing three runs (one earned) in only three
innings of work. Green left the game after the third inning due to a pulled groin muscle. His status is day-to-day.
The teams will face off in the rubber game of their three-game series on Sunday at 5:35; it will also be the last game before the All-Star Break. Southern Maryland will send righty Michael Schlact (3-0, 3.86 ERA) to the hill against southpaw Eddy Camacho (3-0, 3.60 ERA) for Camden. The game can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
