Patriots defeat Blue Crabs
September 4, 2009 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Somerset Patriots News Release
The Blue Crabs continued their rocky start to September upon returning home on Friday night for the first of a three-game series with the Somerset Patriots. The Crabs dropped their fourth game in five tries, as the Patriots ran away with an 8-1 victory behind seven stellar innings from right-handed starter Jason Standridge (3-3), a veteran of parts of seven Major League seasons. Despite gutting out an eye-popping 146 pitches, Southern Maryland knuckleballer Joe Gannon (9-14) took the loss. Somerset jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning off Gannon, with three base hits and the help of two walks. The inning was highlighted by a bases-loaded walk to Travis Anderson, and an RBI single from Sean Smith. The Patriots tacked on another run in the top of the fourth with another bases-loaded walk, as Smith drove in his second run of the night. The Blue Crabs fought back in the fourth, but it was a short-lived rally as Southern Maryland tallied their only run of the night on a Ken Harvey sacrifice fly to right field. Somerset cemented the game with a four-run seventh, chasing Gannon from the ballgame after six and two-thirds innings pitched. A single and a walk preceded Travis Anderson's sixth home run of the season, a sky-high towering shot to the 310 short porch in left field. Another Gannon walk to Smith would see the Patriots centerfielder score on an Anthony Granato RBI double down the right field line to punctuate the seventh for the final run of the night. Standridge picked up the win allowing just four hits and the one earned run, striking out seven while walking two. Despite Gannon's stamina, Somerset collected 10 of their 13 hits off the righty, and all eight runs were earned. Gannon walked a Blue Crabs individual season-high eight batters, striking out two. With the win, Somerset improved to 75-48 on the season, moving a game and a half ahead of the Blue Crabs at 73-49 for the best overall record in the Atlantic League. Both teams are in first place in their respective divisions in the second half of the season, after each locked up playoff spots in early July with first half division titles. The Blue Crabs are now 7-7 on the season against Patriots, and just 1-3 against Somerset at home at Regency Furniture Stadium. The Blue Crabs will next be in action Saturday evening, for game two of this three-game weekend series against Somerset at Regency Furniture Stadium. Probable starters are RHP Jim Magrane (13-4, 2.90), for Somerset, the league wins and ERA leader, and LHP Randy Keisler (1-1, 7.59) for Southern Maryland, a veteran of parts of six Major League seasons. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
