Newark defeats Camden

Tim Raines' Newark Bears defeated the Camden Riversharks 6-1 to open the three game weekend series at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium in downtown Newark, NJ.

Four-time World Series champion Ramiro Mendoza tossed an impressive seven innings, striking out two Riversharks and giving up just one run to notch his third win of the season. Scott Williamson followed with a scoreless eighth inning, and Tracy Thorpe took to the mound and struck out two of his former teammates for a hitless ninth.

The Bears once again featured double digits in the hits column scoring six runs off of eleven hits, and continue to lead the Atlantic League in team batting. Notably, left fielder Charlton Jimerson went 2-3 including an RBI double in the eighth to stretch his hitting streak to eleven games. Catcher Salomon Manriquez also crushed a double into left field, plating Willis Ontanez in the third.

Camden's Brett Bonvechio hit his seventh homerun of the season in the seventh inning to put Camden's one run on the board.

With the win, Newark's second half of the season improves to 28-25 and Camden's falls to 24-30.
