
Patriots Defeat Blue Crabs 7-1 in Series Opener

Waldorf, MD - The Somerset Patriots (25-26) defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (25-26) 7-1 at Regency Furniture Stadium on Tuesday night in front of 3,790 fans. The Patriots have now won nine of their last 12 games.
Patriots starter Paul Phillips earned his Atlantic League leading seventh win of the season as he was brilliant. Phillips tossed seven innings, allowing just one unearned run and tied a season-high in strikeouts with seven. He walked only one and scattered just three hits. Dan Reichert suffered the loss.
In the top of the second inning the Patriots would score first as left fielder Aaron Mathews collected an RBI on a fielder's choice.
In the ensuing half inning the Blue Crabs would tie the game at 1-1 as designated hitter Brian Barton hit into a double play but scoring was first baseman Jesse Gutierrez.
In the top of the of the fifth frame first baseman Jesse Hoorelbeke spanked a two run single to left field to give the Patriots a 3-1 advantage.
In the top of the seventh inning the Patriots added four insurance runs all with two outs. Shortstop Yunesky Sanchez laced a two run single and Mathews smacked a two run double to give the Patriots a comfortable 7-1 lead which would be the final.
The 2012 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue on the road until Monday, June 25th when the Patriots return home to take on the Long Island Ducks at TD Bank Ballpark at 7:05 pm.
