Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
YORK, Pennsylvania - The Sugar Land Skeeters (22-30) dropped both games of the doubleheader with the York Revolution (26-26) Tuesday night at Sovereign Bank Stadium losing game one, 17-2, and game two, 6-0.
GAME ONE
Revs ace, Corey Thurman (6-1), took the mound in game one against Ryan Ketchner (0-3) of the Skeeters with the home team looking to snap the Skeeters four-game winning streak. Thurman ended up working a complete game giving up just two earned runs on six hits in route to his Atlantic League tying sixth win of the season. Ketchner faltered in an inning and two-thirds giving up nine earned runs off seven hits while walking three.
Jason Lane managed to put the Skeeters on the board first in the first inning. Miguel Negron singled to start the game and stole second to get in scoring position, and with one out, the designated-hitter smacked his fifth double of the season into left to bring Negron home. That was the only time Sugar Land held a lead in the game.
York used a four-run first, five-run second, two-run fourth and six-run fifth in the shortened seven-inning game. In the first inning, Ketchner gave up a three-run blast to Ramon Castro (8) and a solo home run to Andres Perez (6) to relinquish the lead, 4-1. Things got worse in the second for Ketchner. With the bases loaded and the fifth run already having been walked in to push the lead up to four, 5-1, Perez registered his second hit in route to his bid for the cycle. His two-RBI double pushed the score up to 7-1, and Michael Hernandez tagged on two more with a two-RBI single to make it 9-1.
Reliever Sean Morgan made an appearance, but was tossed in the fifth inning from arguing balls and strikes. In the fifth inning, before Morgan was ejected, first baseman Chris Nowak hit the second of three three-run home runs (10) off him to make the score 14-1, and Perez secured a triple in the next at-bat. Hernandez walked putting a second runner on before Morgan left the game. Utility infielder Matt Hagen came in to pitch with Manager Gary Gaetti short on relievers. James Shanks was the first batter he faced, and the story ended up the same with the third three-run home run (7) leaving the yard to cap the scoring at 17-1 after five. Perez picked up his single to complete the cycle, the second ever in York history, in the bottom of the sixth.
The only bright spot of the series continued to be Lane. With one out in the sixth and none on, Lane hit his first home run (1) as a Skeeter over Arch Nemisis, the Green Monster look-a-like down the left field line. The final score ended with that run at 17-2.
GAME TWO
Lefty Derrick Gordon (1-4) got the call for the Skeeters to start game two but fared no better than his teammate from the first. Gordon was rocked for 12 hits allowing six earned runs while walking and striking out three for the loss. Former Major Leaguer Chris Watters (1-0) pitched a stout five innings giving up just four hits and a walk while striking out five on his way to a win.
York used five doubles and a triple to tag Gordon with two runs in the second and three in the third. The final run came in the fifth. With the score already 2-0 after the second, Ramon Castro started the third with a single up the middle. Chris Nowak doubled him around to push the lead up to three, and after an Andrez Perez double, Michael Hernandez brought both around with a triple to deep-center field. He was thrown out on a relay throw trying for an inside-the-park home run, but the score was already out of reach at 5-0. James Shanks picked up another RBI with a single in the fifth with a runner on second and was thrown out trying to stretch it to two.
Skeeters Bites: Jason Lane hit his first home run of the season...Ofilio Castro extended his hitting streak to eight games...Derrick Gordon fired the first complete game (7 innings) for the Skeeters this season...Matt Hagen made his first appearance on the mound with 1.1 IP...
The Skeeters and Revolution cap the four-game series tomorrow night with first pitch scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CDT at Sovereign Bank Stadium before the Skeeters head home Thursday morning.
