Patriots Cook Blue Crabs 9-2

Bridgewater, NJ - The Somerset Patriots defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 9-2 before 5,610 fans at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Sunday afternoon.

The Patriots jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Center fielder Sean Smith tripled and second baseman Teuris Olivares followed with an infield single to put runners on the corners. Smith came around to score on a wild pitch. Designated hitter Brandon Larson then singled and first baseman Josh Pressley drove home Olivares with an RBI double to center field. Third baseman Matt Hagen then drove home both Larson and Pressley with a double to right field. After shortstop Anthony Granato drew a walk, catcher Travis Anderson singled to right to score Hagen. Granato would score the sixth run on Smith's fielder's choice.

The Blue Crabs got on the board with a run in the top of the third inning. Third baseman Enohel Polanco drew a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, and advanced to third on catcher Adam Shorsher's single through the left side. Polanco came home on a double play to make the score 6-1.

Southern Maryland cut the lead to 6-2 on center fielder Jeremy Owens' solo home run (13) in the top of the fifth inning.

Somerset extended the lead on a three-run home run by Anderson (4) in the bottom of the seventh inning to make the score 9-2.

Patriots starter Kip Bouknight (5-1) picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on six hits in six innings pitched. Blue Crabs starter Brad Whitworth (1-2) suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs on five hits without getting an out in the first inning.

The 2008 Somerset Patriots season presented by Ford will continue at home on Monday night with a 7:05 pm game against the Lancaster Barnstormers.
