Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, NJ - Jose Herrera blasted a solo home run over the right-centerfield wall in the bottom of the eleventh to carry the Newark Bears over the Camden Riversharks 8-7 at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Sunday afternoon
With one out in the deciding inning, Herrera drilled the first pitch he saw from Alec Zumwalt beyond the right-centerfield fence to give the Bears their fourth extra-inning victory of the season. The home run was Herrera's 14th of the season.
With one out in the top of the ninth, LJ Biernbaum lined a two-run home run over the left field wall to push the Riversharks ahead of the Bears 7-6. The Bears then tied the game in the bottom of the inning with an RBI groundout by Vic Gutierrez, forcing extra innings.
In his fourth three-hit game of the season, Ramon Nivar went 3-6 and contributed to four of the Bears' eight runs. He got the Bears on board in the first inning with a double, stealing third, and then taking home on a throwing error by Riversharks catcher Alberto Castillo. Nivar then gave the Bears a 2-0 lead in the third with a two-out solo home run, his third of the season.
After a solo Tyler Von Schell home run got the Riversharks on board in the fourth, the team took a 3-2 lead in the fifth. Will Otanez responded for the Bears in the bottom of the fifth, tying the game with a solo shot of his own.
The Bears then pounded out three runs in the bottom of the sixth, highlighted by a two-RBI single by Nivar, to take a 6-3 lead. The Riversharks scored two more runs in the seventh to pull within one run of the lead, setting the stage for the ninth inning.
Andy Shibilo (2-4) pitched the final three innings for the Bears to earn the victory, while Zumwalt (4-2) took the loss for the Riversharks.
The Bears continue their final home stand of the season tomorrow, beginning a three-game series against the York Revolution. The Bears play their home games at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium, conveniently located off Route 280, across the street from the Newark-Broad St. train station, and just minutes from Route 78, the New Jersey Turnpike, and the Garden State Parkway.
