Patriots Avoid Sweep With 4-3 Win

WALDORF, MD- The Somerset Patriots defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 4-3 in front of 2,808 fans at Regency Furniture Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

Somerset broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the top of the seventh inning to take a 4-3 lead when centerfielder Elliott Ayala ripped a two out solo home run (2) to left.

The Blue Crabs struck first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. Southern Maryland loaded the bases on a lead off walk by shortstop George Sandel, a one out single to left by first baseman Clinton Johnston and a hit-by-pitch to third baseman Pat Osborn. Centerfielder Jeremy Owens then hit a RBI single to center that plated Sandel and leftfielder James Shanks followed with a RBI sacrifice fly to center that scored Johnston.

The Patriots tied the game at 2-2 with two runs in the top of the third inning. Second baseman David Housel led off by reaching on a Blue Crabs fielding error on a ground ball to second, moved to third on a hit-and-run single to left by Ayala and scored on a RBI groundout to third by shortstop Teuris Olivares. Third baseman Brandon Larson then followed by lining a one out RBI double down the right field line which plated Ayala.

Somerset took a 3-2 lead with a run in the top of the fifth inning when Larson crushed a two out solo home run (15) to left center.

Southern Maryland tied the game at 3-3 with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Owens hit a one out solo home run (7) to left center.

Patriots' starter Brian Adams (6-4) picked up the win, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out three and walking one in six innings of work. Blue Crabs' reliever Adam Johnson (3-2) suffered the loss, allowing two runs on two hits while walking none and striking out two in three innings pitched. Patriots' closer Brian Reith pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his third save of the season.
