Charlottetown Islanders News Release

Tonight the Islanders entered into the first game of their second Quebec road trip of the season. Entering into the Centre Slush Puppie, the Isles were running into a hot Olympiques squad that has won their last four bouts against tough opponents. Charlottetown is entering with a bit of a confidence booster after taking down the Armada 5-2 to get back into the win column following a disappointing loss to the Remparts. With the Olympiques riding high and moving up the CHL's top ten list the Islanders would have to bring their best efforts to prevail in this one.

This competition started off as stiff as we expected, two of the hottest teams in the Q brought out their strongest efforts to set the table early in this one. Just thirteen seconds before the halfway mark of the first is when Patty Guay kept the fire burning. Guay potted his eighteenth of the season when he sent a clapper past the shoulder of Poirier through traffic. Assisting on Guay's sixteenth goal in as many games was Lukas Cormier and Xavier Simoneau. Unfortunately, it only took the Olympiques two minutes to respond. It was Mathieu Bizier tallying his tenth of the season when he was able to laser one past Goobie. Helpers on Gatineau's opening score went to Kieran Craig and Isaac Belliveau.

Shots after the opening frame favored the Isles 12-7.

The second period kicked off with the Islanders having to kill off a five-minute major that was handed out to Oscar Plandowski late in the first frame for a check from behind. Jonah De Simone was the player Oscar got tangled up with and was able to skate off himself. The Isles penalty kill stayed strong through the long kill to prevent the Olympiques from cashing in on the extended man advantage. Jacob Goobie and Remi Poirier stole the show in period two with neither allowing a puck to get past them. Goobie stood tall to stop eleven shots and Remi Poirier turned away all twelve opportunities the Islanders had.

Shots going into the final frame remained in the Isles favor 24-18.

En Fuego, it seems to be the only phrase I haven't used yet to describe Patrick Guay. Guay is starting to turn into the Isles version of Alexander Ovechkin with his quick release and powerplay execution from his sweet spot in the circle. At 4:51 into the final frame, it was Mr. Powerplay striking again. Guay took a cross-crease feed from his captain and launched it past a sliding Poirier. The helping hand on Guay's second of the game and nineteenth of the season went to Brett Budgell. Patty Guay's powerplay tally stood to be the game-winner in this one as the Isles snatched up an important two points in Gatineau.

Final shots on goal favored the Islanders 29-23.

Patrick Guay continued his hot streak and Jacob Goobie stopped 22 shots to push the Isles to the finish line in this one. As well with the win tonight the Islanders take sole position of first place in the QMJHL. Charlottetown is next in action this Friday when they roll into Rouyn-Noranda territory to take on the Huskies. Puck drops at 8 pm AST.

Three Stars of the Game:

Patrick Guay(CHA)- 2 goals.

Remi Poirier(GAT)- 27 saves.

Xavier Simoneau(CHA)- 1 assist.
