Cape Breton Eagles News Release
BATHURST - The Cape Breton Eagles found a way to win in Matt Anthony's debut as head coach in a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory over the Acadie-Bathurst Titan on Thursday night in New Brunswick.
The Eagles couldn't have asked for a better start as the team took the lead just after the two minute mark. Kiefer Lyons found the puck at the right side of the net and put it over the goal line for his first in the QMJHL. Less than five minutes later it was 2-0 as Conor Shortall notched his first in Eagles colours with a blast from the point.
Bathurst had an opportunity to get back into the game when Logan Camp was sent off for slashing, but during the power play the Titan were caught with too many men on the ice. After the four on four sequence was finished, Émile Hegarty-Aubin tipped a point shot from captain Sean Larcohelle to give the Eagles a 3-0 edge. (Neither of those 20 year old players played in the Eagles last game on Sunday, and it was the first time in the lineup for Larcohelle since November 19th.)
The first period marked a rough start for Bathurst coach Jason Clarke, who was also making his head coaching debut after being hired from Shawinigan where he was the assistant coach. But his team pushed back in the second period.
Undeterred after wiring a shot off the crossbar earlier in the period, Cole Huckins launched a powerful shot from the right faceoff circle past Eagles goaltender Rémi Delafontaine at the 11:11 mark. Just 16 seconds later, Marc-André Gaudet put a precise snipe into the top corner and it was a 3-2 score- one that would hold until the intermission.
Bathurst pressed heavily in the third period, outshooting the Eagles 21-5. Before the 12 minute mark they found their tying goal- some nifty stickhandling from Dylan Andrews finished with a backhander that found its way over the goal line and it was a tie game. The Eagles held on to force overtime.
Despite the heavy shot count in the third period, there was just one shot in a quick overtime session and Ivan Ivan made it count.
39 seconds into the extra session Ivan beat Jan Bednar and the Eagles snapped a losing streak with an overtime victory.
Delafontaine picked up the win, stopping 43 of 46 shots. Bednar took the loss, allowing four goals on 22 shots.
Eagles forward Luke Patterson, who was recalled for the game on Sunday against Rouyn-Noranda, remained with the Eagles for Thursday night's game, winning two of three faceoffs.
The same two teams will do battle tomorrow night in Bathurst. Puck drop on Friday is at 7 PM. The game is available for purchase online at https://watch.chl.ca.
