December 2, 2021 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) News Release
Forward of the Month
Xavier Simoneau - Charlottetown Islanders - 9GP, 4G, 15A, 19Pts
The Charlottetown Islanders continue to occupy their familiar post at the top of the Maritime Division standings thanks in large part to their dynamic newcomer, Xavier Simoneau. The 20-year-old from Saint-Andre-Avellin, Quebec did nothing but score at a torrid pace since joining the Isles after an off-season deal with the Drummondville Voltigeurs. Closing off the month on a seven-game point streak, Simoneau recorded three or more points in six November matchups, including a four-point effort against the Halifax Mooseheads on the 14th. The shifty center remained focused on defensive responsibilities as well, recording a +6 rating over the course of the month.
Simoneau enters December with 38 points in just 19 games, tied for second in the QMJHL. With 266 career regular season points, the march to 300 is on for the 2021 Montreal Canadiens draftee.
Honorable Mention
Joshua Roy- Sherbrooke Phoenix - 10GP, 7G, 13A, 20Pts
The Phoenix have risen again in Sherbrooke and the first overall selection from the 2019 QMJHL Draft is leading the charge. Roy finishes November leading the league scoring derby with 39 points thanks to a memorable month in which he hit the scoresheet in nine of ten games, including the second and third four-point offerings of his young season.
Defenseman of the Month
Miguel Tourigny - Blainville-Boisbriand Armada - 9GP, 8G, 7A, 15Pts
For the second consecutive month, Miguel Tourigny takes home Defenseman of the Month accolades. The 19-year-old form Victoriaville, Quebec followed up a 17-point October with another stellar performance which saw him record a point in each November contest for the Armada, part of a ten-game streak, which included a three-goal, four-assist outing against the Drummondville Voltigeurs on the 5th. Two of his eight goals on the month were of the game-winning variety while three came on the man advantage.
Tourigny leads all league rearguards in scoring with 32 points in 22 games. His 16 goals not only place him fourth among all "Q" skaters in that regard, it has him on pace for a 49-goal campaign, which would eclipse Marc-Andre Bergeron's record for defensemen of 42, set with Shawinigan in 2000-01.
Honorable Mention
Lukas Cormier - Charlottetown Islanders - 9GP, 4G, 12A, 16Pts
The Honorable Mention among defensemen is yet another familiar face. Cormier posted four multi-point outings, including a pair of four-point efforts on against the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada on the 6th and 28th, respectively. Cormier, the Vegas Golden Knights prospect, sits second among QMJHL blueliners with 30 points in 22 games.
Rookie of the Month
Tommy Cormier- Victoriaville Tigres - 10GP, 7G, 8A, 15Pts
Thanks to the turnover of their 2021 President Cup winning roster, the Victoriaville Tigres are getting used to a few new faces. One of the most impressive has been center Tommy Cormier. The 18-year-old from Pont-Rouge, Quebec burst on the scene in November, post multiple points on five occasions. Included in these highlights were his first pair of two-goal games in major junior, against the Gatineau Olympiques and Quebec Remparts, on the 11th and 20threspectively. Four of his goals have come on the powerplay his +/- rating of even or better in eight games has been impressive on a building Tigres team.
Cormier has vaulted into second place among freshmen in the "Q" with 20 points in 16 games. His six powerplay markers place him in a tie for fourth among all players. A 14th round selection of the Chicoutimi Sagueneens in 2019, Cormier's rise is truly an inspiring one.
Honorable Mention
Niks Fenenko- Baie-Comeau Drakkar - 10GP, 0G, 9A, 9Pts
The Baie-Comeau Drakkar earned points in seven of ten November contests and Niks Fenenko played a key role in this success. He also rode a three-game point streak which coincided with a victory in each of those contests for the Drakkar.
Goaltender of the Month
William Rousseau - Quebec Remparts - 4-2-0-0, 1,92 GAA, .921 Sv%, 0 SO
As the Quebec Remparts continue gunning for the upper echelons of the QMJHL standings, William Rousseau has more often than not proven to be its critical last line of defense. The 18-year-old from Trois-Rivieres, Quebec allowed three goal or less in each of his November appearances. During a three-game personal winning streak from the 6th to the 17th, the sophomore backstop turned aside an impressive 68 of 72 shots.
