Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Harlingen - Salvador Paniagua hit his league-lead tying fourth home run of the season to lead off the bottom of the 11th inning off of Doug Brandt (0-1) as the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings beat the Coastal Bend Thunder 2-1 in 11 innings on Wednesday at Harlingen Field.

The WhiteWings (8-6) are now winners of three in a row.

Stephen Whalen retired 10 of the first 12 Thunder (6-8) batters he faced, striking out four and scattering two singles. Mike Goss drew an eight-pitch walk after fouling off a pair of 3-2 pitches. Leivi Ventura followed with a single on the sixth pitch of his at-bat and then, after a meeting at the mound, former-WhiteWing Brian Nichols hit an RBI-single on the first pitch he saw to make it 1-0.

Whalen struck out 10 while scattering six hits and two walks in seven innings.

Ryan Foss allowed one hit and three walks in the first four innings, but the WhiteWings couldn't get on the board until the bottom of the fifth. Jose Sanchez led off with his first hit as a WhiteWing, a single to center field. Dustin Smith misplayed the ball, allowing Sanchez to move to third. Jose Fulgencio hit a grounder to the drawn-in Albert Gonzales at shortstop, who couldn't handle the ball, to send Sanchez home with the game tied 1-1.

Foss allowed two hits and three walks while striking out five in six innings.

The bullpens took over from there, with Miguel Matos throwing three and one-third scoreless innings for the WhiteWings and Chad Lundahl pitching three perfect innings for the Thunder.

Anderson Garcia (1-0) recorded the final two outs for his first win as a WhiteWing.

The WhiteWings and Thunder play game five of this eight-game series on Thirsty Thursday, presented by Local's Lounge, at 7:05 p.m., when fans can get $1 drafts and $2 bottles. Gates open at 6:05. Left-hander Greg Conrad (0-1) is expected to face right-hander Carlos Rangel (3-0).
