Amarillo Dillas News Release
AMARILLO, TX - Wednesday's game went back-and-forth, but the Amarillo Dillas offense, powered by a three RBI performance by Stephen Douglas, came out on top of the Laredo Broncos 10-9 in front of 3,177 fans at the Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa.
Dillas reliever Brent Buffa (2-0) got the win in an inning-and-a-third, allowing three hits and three unearned runs. Broncos reliever Michael Lucas (2-1) got the loss as he allowed the go-ahead runs for the Dillas. Amarillo closer Ramon Geronimo got his third save, allowing two unearned runs, but struck out two in the effort.
Amarillo would get on the board in the second as Douglas hit an infield single, stole both second and third base and scored on a TJ Warren groundout for an early lead. Laredo responded with an RBI groundout in the third by Jason Diaz to tie the game 1-1.
The Dillas retook the lead in the third as Jermel Lomack led off with a bunt single, followed by a Joaquin Rodriguez walk and a Carlos Figueroa RBI single. Alberto Cruz hit a groundball to the shortstop, but the throw to second was missed to score Rodriguez and put runners on the corners. Following an RBI sacrifice fly by Matt Ceriani, Douglas hit the first pitch he saw over the right field wall to score Cruz and himself for a 6-1 Amarillo lead.
Laredo would keep the runs going in the fourth as Doug Thennis hit his second three-run homerun of the series to pull the Broncos deficit to 6-4. Amarillo would continue their offense in the fourth as Lomack hit another infield single, went to third on a Rodriguez single and scored on another Figueroa RBI, this time a double for a 7-4 score.
The Broncos would tie the game in the seventh after the removal of starter Ryan Mitchell. With runners on first and second and two outs, Diaz hit a chopper back to the pitcher Buffa, who knocked it down but overthrew Cruz at first to score two runs and put Diaz at third. The tying run would score on a Ben Wolgamot RBI single to tie the game 7-7.
The Dillas retook the lead in the bottom half of the seventh. Back-to-back walks to Cruz and Ceriani were followed by an RBI double by Douglas to put Amarillo back on top. Following an intentional walk, Kyle Hobbs hit a grounder to first and was thrown home, but the catcher dropped the ball to score Ceriani for a 9-7 lead.
Adam De La Garza led off the eighth inning with his second homerun of the season for a three-run lead. The Broncos scored two unearned runs in the ninth, but Geronimo finished them off to preserve the series win and the victory 10-9.
With the win, the Dillas improve to 8-6, while the Broncos fall to 4-10. Thursday, Amarillo will travel to San Angelo to take on the Colts for the opening game of a four-game series at 7:05pm.
