Palm Beach's Rally Falls Short

JUPITER, Fla. - The Palm Beach Cardinals (3-2, 35 - 40) were defeated by the Daytona Tortugas, 3 - 2, in game three of the four game series at Roger Dean Stadium. In the bottom of the ninth, Palm Beach scored one run with two outs to come within one run of tying the game. With a runner on first base, Casey Turgeon lined out to the second baseman to end the game. Daytona scored their three runs in the top of the sixth inning off Palm Beach's starting pitcher, Luke Weaver. Weaver suffered his fourth loss in the eighth start of the season.

After six scoreless innings, the Tortugas broke the tie after Weaver record the first out of the seventh inning. He walked leadoff man, Sebastian Elizalde and gave up a double to Robert Ramirez, putting runners in scoring position for Brain O'Grady. On a 0 - 2 count, O'Grady hit a home run over the right field wall in his first game as a Tortuga. After the runs scored, Weaver was replaced on the mound by Silfredo Garcia.

In the bottom of the seventh, Palm Beach answered Daytona by scoring one run off two hits. Derek Gibson, who went 3 - 4 on the night, led off the inning with his third single. The next batter, Carson Kelly, doubled deep to center field, giving Gibson enough time to score from first base. Later in the inning, Turgeon reached base after being hit in the foot, but both runners were stranded on Robelys Reyes' fly out to left field.

To complete the win, Daytona used three more pitchers after starter, Sal Romano, completed six innings. After Palm Beach began a comeback in the bottom of the ninth, the Tortugas used Joe Mantoni and El'Hajj Muhammad to finalize the win. After Mantoni recorded two outs and allowed one hit, Muhammad came to the mound. He earned his eighth save of the season.

For Palm Beach, the bullpen was hitless in the 2.2 innings of work. Garcia allowed one walk and struck out one between the seventh and eighth innings, while Chris Perry faced the minimum in the ninth. Perry struck out O'Grady to complete his appearance.

The Cardinals will finish their four game series with Daytona on Tuesday, June 30 with the first pitched is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. On Wednesday, the Cardinals will play host the Fort Myers Miracle for a three game series.
