Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL (June 29, 2015) - Baseball can be so temperamental. Take for instance Sunday afternoon's game, when the Stone Crabs needed just six hits to bounce the Threshers 7-4. Fast forward to Monday night, when a repeat performance didn't do the trick as the Threshers used three early runs and a three hit night from Andrew Pullin to move a game up in the four game series. The Stone Crabs were held to just one run on six hits, and lost for the ninth time in their last 11.

Control hasn't really been an issue for hard throwing righthander German Marquez lately. In his previous six starts, the 20-year-old had issued just six walks in more than 32 innings of work. However, he'd also allowed 43 hits while going 1-4 with a no decision after a stellar first two months of the season. For the third straight day, the Threshers scored first when Carlos Tocci hit a one out single in the first inning. Two pitches later, Pullin cranked his 11th double down the right field line to put Clearwater ahead 1-0 three batters in.

Willians Astudillo then led off the second with an opposite field single into right, and Devin Lohman laid down a sacrifice bunt to get him to second. Marquez hurt himself when he hit Mitchell Walding with an 0-1 pitch, and a single by Chase Harris loaded the bases for the top of the order. Malquin Canelo buried a sacrifice fly to deep center for his fifth RBI in five games, and Tocci's sinking liner was caught by a diving Braxton Lee in center for the final out.

With just a pair of singles by Kean Wong and Lee through the first four innings, the 'Crabs came up against Yacksel Rios after his first inning went 1-2-3 in the fourth. Jace Conrad lined a single over second, and stole the bag after Rios (3-2) threw back to first on a late pickoff attempt that should have gotten the third baseman for the second out. A Maxx Tissenbaum groundout to first got Conrad to third, and a wild pitch brought him in to make it 3-1. Pullin's second run batted in came in the top of the fifth when he singled home Canelo following a leadoff double down the left field line.

Charlotte's opportunities picked up a bit in the later innings, starting with a deep flyout to the wall in right off the bat of Casey Gillaspie that ended the sixth. In the seventh, Marjama got to third with two outs after a double and a Conrad groundout. Tissenbaum then rolled a soft grounder to second that took care of the side. It was another strong night for the bullpen as Kyle McKenzie and Brad Schreiber combined for three scoreless innings once Marquez (4-7) left after the sixth. Gillaspie later led off the ninth with a hard single into right off Edubray Ramos, who had pitched the eighth. Going for his seventh save, the righthander fanned Goetzman and Marjama but walked Conrad to put the tying runs on base for Tissenbaum. The catcher offered at the first pitch and produced a game-ending groundout to short that gave the Threshers their fourth win in five to start the second half.

The series will come to an end on Tuesday night at 7:00 PM when Andrew Bellatti returns to Charlotte Sports Park to make a rehab start against David Whitehead (4-6, 4.44 ERA). Every Tuesday receive $2 tickets, $2 parking, $2 hot dogs, and $2 fountain sodas, and enjoy $2 draft beers until the end of the 5th inning!
