Wheeling Nailers News Release
NORFOLK, VA- For the third consecutive season, the Wheeling Nailers got to celebrate on Opening Night. Ty Loney netted a pair of goals against his former club, and Franky Palazzese was perfect on 23 shots, as the Nailers blanked the Norfolk Admirals, 3-0 at Norfolk Scope Arena.
The first period didn't feature any scoring, but there was one fight that took place, as Shane Bakker dropped the mitts with Gabriel Verpaelst. The first goal was netted at the 1:16 mark of the middle frame, 34 seconds after the Nailers successfully killed off a penalty. Wheeling forced a turnover in neutral ice, leading John McCarron to set up Ty Loney in the high slot. Loney wired a wrist shot off of the left post and in for the first marker of the 2015-16 season. The assist was McCarron's first point as a pro.
Although it took 2:13 longer, the third period started in similar fashion to the second stanza, all the way down to the goal scorer. Sahir Gill set up the play with a pinpoint pass from the trapezoid, leading Loney into a one-timer, which he drove home from the bottom of the right circle. Wheeling's defense took care of business from there, and with just under 30 seconds to go, Jarrett Burton iced the 3-0 final score with an empty net tally.
Franky Palazzese earned his second career shutout for the Nailers, stopping all 23 shots he faced in the winning effort. Ty Rimmer took the loss for Norfolk, despite turning away 34 of 36 shots.
The Nailers and Admirals will do battle once again on Saturday at 7:15. Wheeling's home opener takes place on October 24th against Brampton at 7:35.
Individual tickets, season tickets, mini plans, and group tickets are on sale now, with prices starting as low as $10 per seat. For tickets and more information, call the Nailers at (304) 234-GOAL or online at wheelingnailers.com.
