Sanford Mainers News Release
On Sunday night the Sanford Mainers pounced all over the Laconia Muskrats 16-2 to end their three game losing streak. On Monday they continued their success edging the Mystic Schooners 1-0.
This was the ninth one-run game the Mainers found themselves to be a part of, but with solid pitching from starter Nick Poore and the bullpen, the Mainers were able to pull out the victory.
Poore, who comes from the Boston College Eagles pitching staff, threw six solid innings allowing only one hit, walking one, and striking out eight.
Cole Bryant got the start for the Schooners, and though he picked up the loss, he pitched 7.1 strong innings giving up four hits and the sole run the Mainers scored. He walked only one and struck out eight in that time.
The only run of the game came in the eight inning when Anthony Papio led things off with a one out single to left. Robert Wayman then smacked a 2-2 pitch to right field allowing Papio to advance to third. With runners at the corners Nate LaPointe, who is also from Boston College, hit a ground ball through the left side bringing in Papio.
The Schooners had a chance in the bottom of the ninth to tie, and possibly walk-off with a win. Steven Rice got the first two hitters to retire, but gave up three straight singles to load the bases. He then got Byron Campbell to ground out to LaPointe at third to hold on to the victory.
The Mainers improve to 10-11 on the season and will return home for the next four days. They will face the Plymouth Pilgrims twice tomorrow as they continue the suspended game from June 25th at 3pm and will play the regular scheduled game at 6:30pm. Sam McKay is expected to get the start for game one.
