Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - The San Diego Padres today recalled Portland right-handed pitcher Chad Reineke and optioned right-handed pitcher Cla Meredith to the Beavers. Additionally, right-handed pitcher Ernesto Frieri was transferred to Portland from Class A Lake Elsinore.

Reineke (RINE-uh-kee), 26, will start for the Padres tonight against Philadelphia. The right-hander was acquired by San Diego from Houston on July 22 in exchange for left-handed pitcher Randy Wolf. He has made three starts for Portland, going 0-1 with a 4.15 ERA (8er, 17.1ip), 13 strikeouts and six walks. Reineke made 20 appearances (19 starts) for Triple-A Round Rock and went 5-9 with one complete game and a 4.41 ERA, recording 100 strikeouts compared to 35 walks. His 113 strikeouts overall this season currently rank fifth in the Pacific Coast League.

Meredith, 25, is 0-3 with a 3.99 ERA (25er, 56.1ip), 39 strikeouts and 22 walks in 60 relief appearances for San Diego this season. His 60 outings are tied for 10th-most in the National League. In 24 relief appearances with the Beavers in 2006, Meredith was 3-0 with a 1.39 ERA, two saves and 24 strikeouts after being acquired from Boston in May. On June 9, 2006, Meredith teamed with Ryan Meaux and Aquilino Lopez on a combined perfect game in the back end of a doubleheader at Sacramento.

Frieri, 23, is 7-6 with a 4.23 ERA and 102 strikeouts in 32 appearances (17 starts) with Lake Elsinore this season. Originally signed by the Padres as a non-drafted free agent on Jan. 18, 2003, Frieri, a native of Bolivar, Colombia, will make his Triple-A debut tonight, starting in place of Reineke as the Beavers open a four-game series at Tucson.

With today's moves, the Beavers' active roster remains at its 24-man limit.
