Tucson Sidewinders News Release

Tucson, AZ - Portland scored all of their five runs on three homeruns to give them a 5-1 victory over the Sidewinders on Saturday night.

Arizona Diamondback Justin Upton rehabbed in his third game with Tucson going 1-for-3 with a single to left, a walk, and two strike outs.

The first six innings of the game featured a pitching duel between starters Max Scherzer and Ernesto Frieri. Tucson's Scherzer pitched six scoreless innings, allowing only one hit, and struck out six batters while newly promoted Ernesto Frieri gave up one earned run on two hits in six innings of work and struck out seven batters.

Tucson's only run came in the first inning, when Tim Raines, Jr. started off the frame with a walk. He stole second base and then went to third on a wild pitch by Frieri. The next batter, Trent Oeltjen brought him home with a ground out to first base.

The Beavers' first home run was a pinch-hit, three run bomb to right field by Peter Ciofrone in the seventh inning, which scored Justin Huber and Matt Antonelli.

The Sidewinders threatened in the eighth inning with runners on second and third with one out, but were unable to bring in any runs thanks to Portland's bullpen who struck out Josh Whitesell and Jamie D'Antona to get out of the inning.

Portland extended their lead in the top of the ninth inning with back-to-back home runs off of Tucson reliever Reid Mahon. JD Closser and Antonelli were the first two batters Mahon faced and provided the back-to-back solo shots.

The Sidewinders will face Portland in game two of a four game series on Sunday at 6:00 PM. RHP Juan Gutierrez (3-10, 6.68) is scheduled to start for Tucson. Right-hander Cesar Ramos (9-8, 5.16) will start for the Beavers. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 5:50 p.m.
