PORTLAND, Ore. - The San Diego Padres today optioned outfielder Jody Gerut to Portland and reinstated outfielder Jim Edmunds from the 15-day disabled list. Executive vice president/general manager Kevin Towers made the announcement.
Gerut, 30, played in four of the Padres' first five games of the 2008 season, going 1-for-6. In 324 major league games, he has batted .263 with 75 doubles, eight triples, 34 home runs, 140 RBIs, 153 runs and 109 walks with Cleveland (2003-2005), the Chicago Cubs (2005), Pittsburgh (2005) and San Diego (2008). Gerut, who signed a minor league contract with San Diego on Jan. 27, made the Padres Opening Day roster as a non-roster invitee.
Gerut was originally a second-round selection of the Colorado Rockies in the 1998 draft.
Edmonds suffered a strained right calf muscle on March 6 in a spring training game in Peoria, Ariz., against the Rockies. He played center field Thursday and Friday in a rehabilitation assignment at Class A Lake Elsinore, going a combined 2-for-6.
