Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Shawn Estes tossed six shutout innings, and Edgar Gonzalez was 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs to lead the Portland Beavers to a 6-1 victory over the Fresno Grizzlies Friday night at PGE Park.

The Beavers improved to 2-0 on the young season, marking just the second time in the team's eight seasons back in the Pacific Coast League that it has won its first two games.

Estes (1-0) struck out four and limited the Grizzlies (0-2) to four hits and one walk on the way to his first win at the Triple-A level since a rehab start with Fresno in 1998.

Gonzalez belted a two-run homer with Estes aboard in the third inning and followed Matt Antonelli's RBI triple in the fifth with a run-scoring single to right-center.

Chip Ambres hit his second solo home run of the season in the sixth to up Portland's lead to 5-0.

Julio Mateo yielded five runs and six hits in five innings in the loss for the Grizzlies.

Clay Timpner drove in Brian Horwitz with a two-out, RBI single in the seventh, but Portland reinstated its five-run cushion when Luke Carlin scored from third on an error charged to catcher Eliezer Alfonzo.

NOTES: Antonelli has tripled in each of his first two Triple-A games ... Portland starting pitchers (Josh Geer, Estes) have combined to allow just one run on five hits in 13 innings over the first two games of the campaign ... all 12 Portland position players have now seen action as manager Randy Ready inserted Gonzalez, Carlin, Marshall McDougall and Oscar Robles into the starting lineup on Friday ... pitcher Paul Abraham made his Triple-A debut in relief of Estes, allowing a run in the seventh inning.
