LAST NIGHT: Memphis jump on A.J Murray early, tagging the lefty for four runs in the first and another in the second. Oklahoma was able to half the deficit after one and tied the game at five after six innings, thanks to a Chris Shelton double in the first that drove in a pair, and solo home runs from Casey Benjamin and Jarrod Saltalamacchia in the second and third, respectively, and a run-scoring sacrifice by Shelton in the sixth. Memphis regained control in the seventh, tagging two relievers for five runs. Shelton lead off the bottom of the ninth with his first home run for Oklahoma, but the Redbird's Chris Perez retired the next three batters to end the game.
UNEARNED: All five runs charged to Murray last night were unearned due to errors, and the southpaw was able to endure four complete innings, despite throwing 51 of his 98 pitches in the top of the first. A.J. ranks among the early PCL League Leaders with a 0.00 ERA.
ANOTHER GOOD START: Chris Shelton went 2-3 with a double, home run, and a sacrifice to drive in four of the six RedHawks runs. Shelton hit over .400 early on last season, and hit a pair of home runs at Kansas City on Opening Day for Detroit in 2006.
STRANDED: The RedHawks and Redbirds combined to strand 31 runners on base last night, following 34 from Thursday's opener. Oklahoma is hitting .214 with runners in scoring position, while Memphis is hitting .286.
K-MEN: The RedHawks pitching staff remains tied with Tacoma for the league lead strikeouts with 19.
MEMPHIS AT A GLANCE: RF Joe Mather is off to an impressive start, batting .556 with five hits in nine at bats, raking one double, one triple, and one home run, while driving in three and scoring five times... Colby Rasmus went 1-6 with a leadoff single last night, following his three-hit Triple-A debut Thursday... David Freese's eighth inning single was his first hit at this level. Freese played all of last season for Class A Lake Elsinore... Chris Perez finished last night's game for the Redbirds. Baseball America rates Perez as the second best prospect in the Cardinal's organization.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Texas beat the LA Angels 11-6... Frisco bested Springfield 2-1... Bakersfield fell 7-2 to San Jose... Clinton lost at home to Cedar Rapids 10-6.
DOT-DOT-DOT: RH Luis Mendoza will make a rehab start on Monday for Oklahoma. Mendoza is currently on the Rangers' 15-Day Disabled List with a blister on his right-middle finger... Brandon Boggs made his first start of the season last night for Oklahoma. Boggs is recovering from a minor hand injury sustained earlier this week... Nelson Cruz was in uniform in the dugout last night, but did not play. Cruz was added to the roster yesterday, and is expected to play next week... Sunday's game is a 4:05 start due to the Jeremy Camp concert.
