Oklahoma City Comets News Release
The Oklahoma RedHawks beat the Memphis Redbirds 7-1 Saturday evening at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. Doug Mathis pitched eight strong innings, allowing one run on five hits while striking out four, and was the benefactor of ten RedHawks' hits, including home runs from Ryan Roberts and Chris Shelton.
Oklahoma took a 3-0 lead after three innings. Roberts led off the inning with his first home run of the season. Jason Ellison scored on a throwing error by Colby Rasmus on a ball hit by German Duran, and Duran came home on a single by Kevin Mench. The RedHawks tacked on their final four runs in the fifth inning. Casey Benjamin walked and advanced to third on an error. Mench reached on a fielder's choice, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia singled in Benjamin. Shelton drove Mench and Saltalamacchia in with his second home run of the season. Shelton has hit home runs in back-to-back games, and has a league-high seven runs batted in.
The offense was more than enough for Mathis (1-0). Four Redbirds reached base over the first seven innings off the right-hander. The lone Memphis run came in the eighth inning when Midwest City native Casey Rowlett drove Mark Johnson home from second. Frank Francisco faced the minimum in the ninth to finish the game in his first appearance of the season.
Oklahoma and Memphis play the final game of this four-game series Sunday afternoon at 4:05 at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark.
