San Rafael Pacifics News Release
SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - After allowing teammate Steve Detwiler to play the role of leading man in Monday night's season opener, right fielder Maikel Jova took center stage Tuesday, leading the Pacifics to their second win in as many days, a 4-1 decision over the Sonoma County Grapes at Albert Park.
Th Cuban native was 3 for 4, belted a home run in the third inning, hit a ground-rule double in the fifth and drove in four runs. He now leads the Northern American League's Northern Division with five RBIs on the season. Jova showed off his strong arm in the 4th, throwing out the Grapes' George Bann, who was trying to stretch a double into a triple.
Most of the damage was done against Grapes starter Ross Pomerantz, a 2007 Marin Academy High graduate, who earned a spring training invite from the pacifies last month. Pomerantz lasted three innings, allowed four runs on three hits, while striking out a pair and walking five.
Brian Gump earned the win with five innings of shutout ball for San Rafael (2-0). The 6-foot-2 lefty struck out five, allowed five hits and hit a pair of batters.
Tyler Graham picked up his second save in as many opportunities. Detwiler was 0 for 3 with a walk.
