Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC- In front of a regional television audience that reached over 4.5 million homes throughout the Southeast the Myrtle Beach Pelicans came up short against the visiting Potomac Nationals on Monday night at Coastal Federal Field, 5-1. The Nationals fought from behind and rode the strength of two home runs to defeat the Birds in the series opener.

Myrtle Beach put the first run of the night on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 4th inning when All-Star catcher, Jarrod Saltalamacchia unloaded a deep drive over the left field fence, his 12th home run of the season, and his third blast in two days. Saltalamacchia's homer gave the Pelicans a brief 1-0 lead.

Potomac went to work in the top of the 6th inning and tied the ballgame at 1-1 when 2B Shawn Norris delivered a solo home run, his 2nd of the year, over the right field wall.

In the 7th the P-Nats added two more runs highlighted by an RBI double off the bat of SS Ian Desmond and an RBI base hit courtesy of Norris. The second RBI of the night from Norris upped the Nationals lead to 3-1.

The Nationals added an insurance run in the top of the 8th thanks to an RBI base hit from LF Chad Chop to push the score to 4-1 in favor of Potomac. In the top of the 9th one of the hottest prospects in the Washington Nationals organization, 3B Kory Casto, belted his 20th home run of the season to make the score 5-1, putting the finishing touches on a Potomac victory.

What does Pelicans starting pitcher Kelvin Villa have to do to earn his first victory of the season? Tonight he pitched arguably his best game of the season, but the 19-year-old lefty was unable to pick up his elusive first win even with a strong six inning effort. Villa allowed just one run on four hits and struck out four, but didn't receive much run support in the no-decision. Reliever, Matt Lorenzo (L, 0-1) took the loss in his Pelicans debut, allowing three runs to score on five hits in two innings of work. Lorenzo was traded to the Braves organization from Texas last week for Braves reliever Kevin Gryboski.

Potomac starter Mike O'Conner (W, 6-9) bulldogged his way through eight solid innings, allowing one run on four hits, while fanning seven in the win. Closer, Dan Kolb struck out the Pelicans side in the 9th to finish the game.

For Myrtle Beach offensively, Saltalamacchia hit the ball hard every at-bat and finished the evening 2-4 with a homer and a double. Salty has now recorded four straight multi-hit games and is now batting .500 (9-18) over his last four games. CF Steven Doetsch and SS Jaime Trejo added base hits for the Pelicans in the loss.
