Salem Red Sox News Release
Salem, VA--- The Salem Avalanche defeated the Wilmington Blue Rocks, 4-0, in a five-inning, rain-shortened game on Monday night at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium. The Rocks are 0-4 with two games remaining on the current six-game road trip. Wilmington has lost five in a row and falls to 19 games below .500 with their overall record.
Salem scored four runs in the first inning against losing pitcher Steve Langone (3-4), who was making his fourth straight start after making 13 appearances out of the bullpen to open the season. Langone has three losses against Salem.
Mario Garza got the Salem offense rolling by driving in two runs with a two-out double off of the base of the right-field wall to give Salem a 2-0 advantage. Ervin Alcantara followed with an RBI single and he scored on a single by Saul Torres to cap the scoring.
Langone settled in after a shaky start and allowed only two runners to reach on a hit and error over the next four innings.
Mitch Talbot (5-7) gave up two singles in the first inning to Bryan Pritz and Brant Ust, but retired the next two hitters and left two runners on board.
Talbot, 21, retired eight in a row and 13 of 14 before a rain delay began prior to the start of the sixth inning.
The rain delay lasted a little under an hour before the game was called and ruled official.
The Blue Rocks and Avalanche continue their three-game series on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Andrew Dobies (3-4, 6.30) opposes Salem's Chance Douglass (7-8, 3.59).
Game Notes: Pritz went 1-for-2 and has hit safely in six in a row. Pritz has 11 hits over his last 23 at-bats.
Iggy Suarez was removed from the ballgame in the bottom of the third inning after he was hit by a pitch in the top of the inning.
