WINSTON-SALEM, NC (JULY 25, 2010) - A good game turned bad on Sunday afternoon when Potomac scored ten runs in the eighth inning to thump the Dash 13-3 at BB&T Ballpark. The Nationals entered the inning with a one-run lead that quickly grew to 11 and the P-Nats earned a split of the four-game series.
Both teams were quiet offensively as Terry Doyle and A.J. Morris zipped through four scoreless innings. The Nationals (16-12, 47-51) nicked the scoreboard first on an RBI single by Will Ortiz in the fifth to go ahead 1-0.
That score held until the seventh, when Matt Wickswat made his Dash debut in relief of Doyle. Wickswat got the first two batters before the next four reached base on three hits and an error. Bill Rhinehart hit a two-run double to bring home a pair of unearned runs and extend Potomac's advantage to 3-0.
Winston-Salem (15-14, 58-41) scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh against new Nationals pitcher Clayton Dill. Ozzie Lewis hit an RBI single and Jordan Cheatham walked with the bases loaded to bring home a second run. Mike Richard struck out against Carlos Martinez to end the inning with bases loaded.
The game turned dramatically in Potomac's favor in the top of the eighth inning. The first eight batters reached against Charlis Burdie, who did not retire a batter in the outing. All eight men came home to score, as did two more against Leroy Hunt. Steve Lombardozzi, Ortiz, Derek Norris, and Rhinehart each had RBI doubles and Dan Lyons hit a three-run home run. It was the highest-scoring inning for a Dash opponent all season and it gave the Nationals a 13-2 lead.
Seth Loman hit a solo home run in the ninth inning to account for the Dash's final run. It was his first home run since June 7, a span of 149 consecutive at bats.
Morris (3-2) earned the win with six shutout innings and only two hits allowed. Doyle (5-6) suffered his third straight tough-luck loss, giving up one run in six innings. It was the third straight loss for Doyle, who has allowed a total of three earned runs in this losing streak. Martinez collected his first save with 2.1 innings of relief.
The Dash looks to bounce back on Monday when it welcomes the Kinston Indians to town. RHP Dylan Axelrod (5-2, 2.91) opposes RHP Marty Popham (1-3, 3.94) in a 7 p.m. start. The audio broadcast begins at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com .
