Providence Bruins News Release
Marlborough, MA - The Providence Bruins shutout the Worcester Sharks4-0 on Wednesday night at the New England Sports Center behind three points from Yannick Riendeau and 22 saves from goaltender Matt Dalton. Riendeau, Casey Haines, Brandon Gentile and Antoine Roussel scored goals for the P-Bruins.
Providence took an early lead in the first with a goal at the 12:44 mark as Riendeau fed a pass from low in the Sharks zone to a lone Gentile flying across the blue line, setting him up for an easy goal and his first of the preseason. Punches were thrown and blood was shed at the 10:30 mark, resulting in a five minute fighting major and game misconduct for Providence new-comer Todd Perry. He left with 20 PIM to his credit, a game-high. Riendeau finished the period on a high note when he ripped a shot from the top of the circle over Carter Hutton's shoulder with 4:19 remaining in the period. Jordan Knackstedt and Devin Timberlake picked up the assists.
The second period got off to a slower start, but Providence was able to keep up the intensity and intercept Worcester's sloppy passes. Kirk McDonaldcapitalized on a failed Worcester break out and passed it over to Roussel, who shot it past a dazed looking Kevin Reiter, giving Providence a 3-0 lead at 12:37 of the second period. Despite a few moments of confusion and minor scuffles in front of Providence's net, Dalton was able to keep Worcester off the scoreboard.
Providence gave the fans and Worcester players a glimpse into their bag of tricks in the third period as Max Sauve and Haines repeatedly dangled through Worcester's flat footed defense. Riendeau was able to connect with Haines at the 12:13 mark to give Providence a 4-0 lead and the eventual win. Riendeau's stick deflected a Worcester break out pass at the blue line and Haines picked it out of the air for a shot on goal. After a scuffle in front of the net, Haines was able to connect and tip it past Worcester's Reiter. The contest ended with one last boxing match between Jack Christian and Worcester's Garet Hunt with 10.2 remaining.
Providence out-shot Worcester 27-22 in the win, going 1-for-7 on the power play and a perfect 6-of-6 on the penalty kill. Dalton earned top star honors, followed by Riendeau as the second star and Gentile garnering the third star.
