Manchester Monarchs News Release

MANCHESTER, NH - The Monarchs Care Foundation, the charitable arm of the Manchester Monarchs, announced on Wednesday that they are partnering with the New Hampshire Food Bank, Shaw's and AutoFair to host their second annual Max & Cheese Food Drive at the Verizon Wireless Arena. This season's Max & Cheese Food Drive will kick off at the Monarchs Home Opener on Saturday, October 16 against the Providence Bruins at 7:00 p.m. and will continue throughout the five home games during the month of October.

The Monarchs Care Foundation is challenging fans to bring 10,000 boxes of macaroni and cheese to Opening Night in honor of the franchise's 10th season in the Queen City. In addition to this hefty goal on Opening Night, the Monarchs will be accepting boxes of macaroni and cheese throughout the month of October as it is "Macaroni and Cheese Month" for the New Hampshire Food Bank. Fans are encouraged to use their boxes of macaroni and cheese as noisemakers at the Monarchs games when they host the Springfield Falcons on Sunday, October 17, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Friday, October 22, the Charlotte Checkers on Sunday, October 24 and the Sound Tigers on Friday, October 29. At the end of the games, fans can donate their boxes to the New Hampshire Food Bank by dropping them off at the Customer Care Booth behind section 105.

On Opening Night, volunteers from both Shaw's and AutoFair will assist in selling and collecting boxes of macaroni and cheese. The Monarchs Care Foundation will also have boxes of macaroni and cheese available during the game for donations to the New Hampshire Food Bank.

"The Monarchs Care Foundation and the Manchester Monarchs are proud to partner with these local businesses again this season to give back to the community and help feed the hungry," explained Monarchs Senior Vice President Cheryl Abbott. "This initiative was a huge success last season. Our fans really enjoyed being able to use the boxes to cheer on the team and then give them to a great cause after the game that we decided to extend this year's cheesy promotion throughout the entire first month of our season and challenge our fans to reach 10,000 boxes! We are committed to the city of Manchester and the state of New Hampshire and by hosting a month-long Max & Cheese Food Drive, we'll be able to assist in feeding thousands of families across the state."

Shaw's will be promoting the Max & Cheese Food Drive, as well as marketing their brand of macaroni and cheese, throughout 11 stores in New Hampshire. The Monarchs mascot, Max, will be visiting these locations to spread the word about the food drive and encourage fans to join him at the Monarchs Home Opener. Shaw's will also contribute 50 cases of Shaw's brand of macaroni and cheese for the Monarchs Home Opener in case fans do not bring a box of their own.

"Shaw's is excited to be involved in this event with the New Hampshire Food Bank and the Manchester Monarchs," said Shaw's Concord Store Director Mike Wirtanen. "This is a fun and creative way to enjoy Opening Night and make a difference with a donation to the New Hampshire Food Bank. Hunger action is core to our charitable mission, and we are honored to support this cause."

In addition, vehicles from AutoFair will be located around the arena on Opening Night and will collect the boxes of macaroni and cheese for delivery to the New Hampshire Food Bank.

"AutoFair is thrilled to be a part of this wonderful initiative," said President and CEO of AutoFair, Andy Crews. "We are committed to helping the hungry and making some noise at the Monarchs Home Opener."

A box of macaroni and cheese is a meal in itself. It has the basic building blocks of a wholesome meal and it's so easy to make, even kids can do it. Macaroni and cheese is a comfort food and a staple item at the New Hampshire Food Bank as it has a two-year shelf life.

"Macaroni and cheese is one of the most requested items at the food bank," said the New Hampshire Food Bank's Executive Director Melanie Gosselin. "On an average, we distribute 20,000 pounds of food a day to over 400 agencies throughout the state. The demand for food grows on a daily basis and this food drive will assist us in meeting those demands. Last year's first Max & Cheese Food Drive was a huge success as we brought in over 8,000 boxes of macaroni and cheese. At the Food Bank, we assign monthly themes for food drives which our donors and advocates host on our behalf. We are happy to announce that October is Macaroni and Cheese Month."

Bring a box of macaroni and cheese to the Max & Cheese Food Drive and make some noise at the Monarchs Home Opener on Saturday, October 16 at 7:00 p.m. versus Providence at the Verizon Wireless Arena. The first 5,000 fans to the Monarchs Home Opener will receive a magnetic schedule for the 20010-11 season.
