P-Bruins Offense Leads to Dominant 6-2 Win in Springfield

Springfield, MA - The Providence Bruins defeated the Springfield Thunderbirds Saturday night 6-2 in the sixth meeting of the season between the two teams. The P-Bruins got two goals from Jordan Szwarz along with goals from Kenny Agostino, Anders Bjork, Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson and Tommy Cross while Jordan Binnington made his 11th start of the season in net.

Providence dominated the opening period, scoring the first three goals of the game. The first came 3:01 into the period, as Szwarz threw a shot on goal from the right point that Samuel Montembeault could not cover up. Agostino was there in from to poke home his ninth goal of the season and gave the P-Bruins a 1-0 lead. Two rookies combined to make it 2-0 Providence at 9:58 of the period, as Forsbacka Karlsson sent a centering feed to Bjork flying in up the right side. He buried his first career AHL goal to double the P-Bruin lead.

Less than two minutes later, Providence put an end to Montembeault's night while on the power play. Jakub Zboril threw a shot in on the Springfield goaltender that again he could not cover. Szwarz was there alone in front to jam it by Montembeault for his team-best 12th goal of the season to make it 3-0 P-Bruins. Evan Cowley was called upon to take over in the Springfield net after Montembeault could only stop 4 of the 7 shots he faced on the night. Anthony Greco cut the Providence lead to 3-1 with a shorthanded breakaway goal with 35 seconds left in the first, but the P-Bruins still held a 3-1 lead after a period of action.

After a scoreless second period, Providence cemented the win with two goals to open the third. Taking a feed from Agostino, who recorded his third point of the night on the play, Cross sent a wrist-shot bar down and in. His fourth goal of the season at 3:20 gave the P-Bruins a 4-1 lead, but they were not done yet. Less than two-minutes after Cross scored, Forsbacka Karlsson gave Providence their largest lead of the night. Bjork sped up the left side and behind the net before centering the puck to Forsbacka Karlsson. He netted his 11th goal of the season, giving Bjork his first AHL multipoint game and Providence a 5-1 lead. Jayce Hawryluk cut into the Springfield deficit with a goal at 10:57, but Szwarz put a beautiful move on Cowley at 15:49 for his 13th goal of the season as the P-Bruins stood victorious by a 6-2 final.

Binnington stopped 27 of 29 shots while Cowley stopped 28 of 31 after entering in the first period. Providence was 1-7 on the power play and 4-4 on the penalty kill. The P-Bruins conclude their weekend tomorrow afternoon when they welcome Syracuse to the Dunk for a 3:05pm faceoff with the Crunch.
