
P-Bruins Fall To Heat 5-2

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins fell to the Abbotsford Heat 5-2 Sunday afternoon at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The P-Bruins got their goals from Trent Whitfield and Jeff Penner. The P-Bruins return home to the Dunkin' Donuts Center Friday, March 5 at 7:05 p.m. for Sport Bottle Night against the Manchester Monarchs.
The Heat took a 1-0 lead at the 2:29 mark of the opening period. Mikael Backlund tallied his 13th goal of the season, while Staffan Kronwall and Jason Jaffray picked up the assists. Providence tied the game at one at the 17:23 mark. Andy Wozniewski carried the puck up the ice and left it for Jordan Knackstedt in the neutral zone. He passed it off to Whitfield, who shot the puck towards the net. The puck went off a Heat defenseman's skate and into the net as Whitfield was credited with his 14th goal of the season. The game went into the first intermission tied at one.
Abbotsford retook the lead at the 10:55 mark of the second period. Shawn Weller netted his second goal of the season, while Mark Mitera and Brett Sutter recorded the assists. Once again the P-Bruins bounced back to tie the game, this time at the 13:12 mark. Knackstedt had the puck in the slot and sent it to the left point for Wozniewski. He fired the puck over to Penner at the right point, who shot it into the net for his sixth goal of the season. The game went into the second intermission tied at two.
The Heat went ahead for good at the 1:49 mark of the third period. Weller scored his third goal of the season and second of the game, while Sutter and Olivier Latendresse grabbed the assists. Abbotsford made it 4-2 at the 2:33 mark. Riley Armstrong tallied his tenth goal of the season, while J.D. Watt had the lone assist. The Heat finished off the scoring at the 19:00 mark with an empty net goal. Sutter netted his seventh goal of the season, while Cam Cunning picked up the lone assist. Abbotsford went onto the 5-2 victory.
Dany Sabourin stopped 31 of 35 shots for the P-Bruins, while David Shantz made 41 saves for the Heat. The P-Bruins were 0-for-4 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.
Providence begins a four game road trip on Friday at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena against the Binghamton Senators at 7:05 p.m. Saturday the P-Bruins take on the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at 7:05 p.m. at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. Providence returns home to The Dunk Friday, March 5 at 7:05 p.m. for Sport Bottle Night against the Monarchs.
