Abbotsford Heat News Release
PROVIDENCE RI - The Abbotsford HEAT moved to 5-1 on their nine game road trip, scoring three times in the third period en route to a 5-2 win over the Providence Bruins on Sunday night.
Shawn Weller bagged a pair of goals in the win for Abbotsford, while Mikael Backlund, Riley Armstrong and Brett Sutter added singled in the win. Brett Sutter finished the game with one goal and two assists on the night. David Shantz returned to the nets for the HEAT and made 41 saves for the win.
Abbotsford would never trail in this game, but had to take the lead three times to get the job done on Sunday night. In the first period, Mikael Backlund would open the scoring for the HEAT, snapping a shot, short side past the blocker of the Bruins goalie, former Canucks net minder Dany Sabourin. Staffan Kronwall and Jason Jaffray would draw the assists as Backlund's 13th goal of the season made the score 1-0 Abbotsford.
Before the period would end, Bruins captain Trent Whitfield would tie the score, tipping a Jordan Knackstedt pass behind Shantz to tie the score at 1-1 after one period. The Heat would outshoot the Bruins 16-14 in the opening period.
In the second period, the Heat would regain the lead. Shawn Weller would be the beneficiary of some great work by Heat d-man Mark Mitera and forward Brett Sutter. Sutter would work hard behind the Bruins net and find Weller out front. Weller would one-time a shot under the cross bar and the HEAT would enjoy their second lead of the game 2-1.
However, just under 2 minutes later, the Bruins would tie it up once again. This time, Jeff Penner would hammer a shot from the right point that would get past a screened Shantz. Penner's 6th of the season tied the game up at 2-2. Both teams would trade chances for the balance of the period, but no other scoring would occur despite both teams combining for 27 shots15 for Providence and 12 for Abbotsford.
The Heat would regain the lead once again in the final frame and once again Shawn Weller would be the man of the moment. Weller would park himself in front of Sabourin and bang in a perfect feed from Olivier Latendresse for his second goal of the game at 1:49. Just under a minute later, the Heat would receive a gift, courtesy of Dany Sabourin, the Bruins goalie. Riley Armstrong would dump a puck on net from just over the centre ice line. The puck would hop past Sabourin on the second hop and jump in to the back of the Bruins net to make the Heat lead 4-2. Brett Sutter would add an empty netter with one minute to play and the Heat would move on to a 5-1 victory.
Abbotsford is now 5-1 thru six games of their nine game road trip. The Heat is now in sole possession of third place in the North Division and still is just two points back of second place Rochester. Abbotsford will now move on to Bridgeport and a date versus the Sound Tigers on Wednesday night. Puck drop will be at 4 pm on Country 107.1 FM.
