Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins couldn't rally for their second comeback in as many nights and fell to the Springfield Falcons 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The P-Bruins' lone goal came from Jamie Arniel.
Springfield opened the scoring with a power play goal at the 5:25 mark when rookie blue-liner Cody Goloubef's shot made it through traffic in front, blanking Nolan Schaefer. David Savard and Nikita Filatov assisted on the opening goal. Providence's young guns set the tempo after the Springfield goal with high-energy shifts from the line of Max Sauvé, Zach Hamill and Arniel. The chemistry between the three created multiple scoring opportunities, with Arniel dancing around defenders with impressive stick work. The toe-drags weren't enough, though, as Springfield net minder David LeNeveu blocked all 15 of Providence's scoring attempts.
Unable to convert on the power play to open the period, Arniel put the P-Bruins on the board just 30 seconds later at the 2:05 mark for his 11thgoal of the season. Arniel stunned LeNeveu with a blistering slap shot from the left circle to bring Providence within one. Blue-liners Nathan McIverand Yury Alexandrov picked up the helpers on the play. Despite largely controlling much of the offensive play, Springfield answered at 9:45 when Matt Calvert was able to connect with a bouncing puck in front of Schaefer's crease. John Moore and Tomas Kubalik assisted on the play. Springfield added another goal to the board at the 16:28 mark. Michael Ratchuk gave the Falcons the 3-1 lead when he rang a shot off the iron. Nick Tarnaskyand Brent Regner were credited with the assists.
Despite opening the third frame on a power play, Providence couldn't convert on the man-advantage. New addition from the parent Bruins, Jordan Caron, created opportunities down low with Joe Colborne and Juraj Simek, but LeNeveu answered the trio's scoring attempts. After back and forth play for much of the period, Springfield scored their third unanswered goal of the game, to give the Falcons a 4-1 lead with two minutes to play. Calvert connected on a tic-tac-toe play with Nick Holden and Moore for his second goal of the game and the Falcons' 4-1 victory.
Schaefer suffered the loss, blocking 20 shots, while LeNeveu stopped 35 of 36 Providence attempts. The P-Bruins went 3-for-5 on the penalty kill and 0-for-5 on the power play.
Providence gets back into action with three games next weekend, beginning Friday for Thundersticks Night against the new Charlotte Checkers at 7:05 p.m. On Saturday, the P-Bruins travel to Hershey for a 7 p.m. tilt. The weekend wraps up on Sunday as Providence hosts Springfield at 4:05 p.m. for Hand Sanitizer Night.
