CLEVELAND --- Two goals in the opening 2:56 of the first period provided Houston with a spark, but it wasn't enough as the Lake Erie Monsters scored five unanswered markers to hand the Aeros a 5-2 defeat Sunday at Quicken Loans Arena. The loss snapped Houston's three-game winning streak.
Houston converted on its first two shots of the game. Chad Rau scored his first goal of the season just 1:58 into the contest to give Houston the lead. Robbie Earl assisted to stretch his scoring streak to six games.
Carson McMillan bagged his fifth goal of the year, and second while the Aeros were short handed, just 58 seconds later with Rau and Justin Falk picking up helpers.
Lake Erie's Luke Walker cut the lead in half on the power play only 55 seconds after McMillan's goal.
Ryan Stoa, Travis Gawryletz and Tom Zanoski recorded second period tallies for the Monsters. Stoa's eighth goal knotted the score at 3:49 and Gawryletz gave Lake Erie the lead at 5:32. The goal also chased Aeros starting goalie Anton Khudobin, who stopped eight of 11 shots, in favor of Matt Hackett.
Stoa added an empty-netter with 1:29 left in regulation to seal the win for Lake Erie, which was winless (0-2-0-2) in four games entering today's action.
The Aeros continue their five-game road trip this Tuesday when they face the Hamilton Bulldogs at 6 p.m. CST. The team returns home Dec. 21, against Hamilton at 7:35 p.m. Fans who bring a toy to help support the Bay Star Ambulance/MD Anderson Cancer Center Toy Drive will receive two tickets to the Aeros game on New Year's Day.
