Pirates Double up Monarchs

MANCHESTER, NH - Derek Whitmore scored a pair of power-play goals to lead the Portland Pirates to a 4-2 win over the Manchester Monarchs in an American Hockey League game played this afternoon in front of 5,561 at the Verizon Wireless Arena.

Max Legault and Colin Stuart also scored for the Pirates, who posted their third consecutive victory and moved into a first place tie with Manchester atop the Atlantic Division. The Pirates are now 17-8-1-1 on the season.

Thomas Hockey and Corey Elkins scored for the Monarchs, who lost their second straight to drop to 17-11-1-1.

Whitmore opened the scoring with a power-play goal five minutes into the contest giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead after one. Legault added to the advantage three minutes into the second to up the count to 2-0 Portland before Stuart made it 3-0 Pirates with five minutes left in the middle frame. Portland carried a 3-0 lead into the third. Hickey got Manchester on the board 34 second into the third to make it a two goal Pirates lead. Whitmore answered with his second power-play goal of the game to restore the Pirates three-goal lead only to see Elkins respond less than two minutes later to bring the home side back to within two and complete the game scoring.

The Pirates out shot the Monarchs 43-27 in the game as David Leggio posted the victory.

The Pirates complete a stretch of four straight games on the road when they return to Manchester to face the Monarchs on Friday for a 7 p.m. start. The game can be heard live on News Talk 95.5 WLOB and on-line at portlandpirates.com beginning with the pre-game show at 2:45 p.m.

The Pirates return home Saturday (December 18) at 7 p.m. in a rematch against the Monarchs. It's another Bud Light Hockey Night in Portland as Five County Credit Union will be providing a free Pirates T-shirt to the first 2,500 fans.
