P-Bruins Extend Point Streak with 5-2 Win over Hershey
February 12, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Providence Bruins News Release
PROVIDENCE, RI - The P-Bruins played a solid 200-foot game in their 5-2 take down of the Hershey Bears. Providence has extended their point streak to an AHL-high 15 games, and extended their home point streak to 17 games. This team has not lost in regulation at home since November 22nd.
Providence let up an early goal when Hershey's Chris Borque sent a centering pass to Chandler Stephenson whose shot found the pack of the net after just 2:56 of play.
The deficit inspired a quick response from the P-Bruins, culminating in Tommy Cross' tying goal. Cross fired off a slap shot from the right point into traffic and eventually found the back of the net.
Andrew Cherniwchan potted the go-ahead goal 16:38 into the first period. Brandon DeFazio drove to the net and crossed the puck to Cherniwchan who batted the puck in on the edge of the crease.
Seth Griffith scored the lone goal of the second period. Griffith collected the puck in the corner then curled up to the blue and unleaded a wrist shot from the high slot that went top left corner.
The P-Bruins went into the third period with a 3-1 lead and never looked back. Ben Youds capitalized on the power play just 0:36 into the third. His slap shot from the right point rocketed past DeFazio's screen in front for his 2nd power play goal of the season.
Frankie Vatrano rounded out the scoring with a power play goal 6:50 into the final frame. Alexander Khokhlachev collected his own rebound then dished the puck to Vatrano who's quick shot from the high slot went blocker side on Ellis. This was Vatrano's 20th goal in 17 games, who is now averaging 1.6 points per game on the season.
Hershey scored with 2:00 to play in regulation, but it wasn't enough to slow down a confident and cohesive Providence team. Jeremy Smith looked solid between the pipes, turning away 24 shots and looked particularly strong glove side.
The P-Bruins are back home at the Dunk Friday February 26th against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
