January 28, 2017 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Providence Bruins News Release
Hartford, Conn - The Providence Bruins fell to the Hartford Wolf Pack Saturday night 4-3 in their final game before the All-Star break. The P-Bruins got goals from Wayne Simpson, Alex Grant and Chris Porter while Anton Khudobin earned the start between the pipes on the same day he was sent back to Providence from Boston.
Providence jumped out a 1-0 lead just 43 seconds into the game as Simpson scored on a wrap-around goal in the trapezoid. Peter Cehlarik and Jordan Szwarz picked up assists on Simpson's 14th goal of the season. The P-Bruins held the lead most of the period, but Hartford tied the game 1-1 with 1:21 left in the period. Philip McRae jumped on a rebound in the crease and deposited the puck in for his fifth goal of the season. Mat Bodie and Garrett Noonan earned assists on the goal that sent the teams into the first intermission tied at one.
The score remained tied deep into the second, but Providence broke the tie at 16:20 while on the power play. Cehlarik sent a pass to Grant at the point who sent a one-time blast through for his eighth goal of the season. Danton Heinen picked up the secondary assist on the goal that gave Providence at 2-1 lead. Hartford again tied the score 77 seconds later, as Matt Carey tipped an Adam Tambellini shot from the left hash by Khudobin to send the game into the second intermission tied 2-2.
The third belonged to Hartford and the Wolf Pack earned their first lead of the game 3:31 into the final period. Ryan Graves took a shot Khudobin saved, but again a loose puck found McRae and he put home his second goal of the game. Tambellini doubled his club's lead at 5:36, beating Khudobin inside the right post for his eighth of the season while giving the Pack a 4-2 lead. Providence would not go down quietly, as at 11:52 Jake DeBrusk and Porter started a 2-1 rush. DeBrusk sent a pass that Porter tipped in the crease to cut the deficit to 4-3. That would be as close as the P-Bruins would get as they fell by a 4-3 final.
Khudobin stopped 29 of 33 shots while Brandon Halverson stopped 20 of 23. Providence was 1-4 on the power play and 2-2 on the penalty kill. Providence begins their All-Star break and return to action Friday at home versus the Springfield Thunderbirds at 7:05 pm. Zane McIntyre and Heinen will be participating in the 2017 AHL All-Star Classic in Lehigh Valley January 29 and 30th.
