Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins defeated the Springfield Falcons 5-1 this evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Nathan McIver, Trent Whitfield, and Kyle MacKinnon scored and Kirk MacDonald added two goals for Providence.
Looking for their third consecutive win, the Springfield Falcons came out flying right off the opening face off. However, Michael Hutchinson was solid between the pipes and the P-Bruins' defense stalwarted any Falcons offensive rushes. As the period hit the 10-minute mark, the momentum shifted in Providence's favor. At 14:54, McIver tallied his first goal and point of the season when he deflected a shot past Paul Dainton amongst traffic in front. Less than a minute later, Whitfield made a rush down the left win and fed MacDonald, crashing through the slot, a pass. MacDonald easily redirected the puck past Dainton to give the P-Bruins a 2-0 lead. Whitfield and the P-Bruins continued to dominate the struggling Falcons as the end of the period neared. While shorthanded, Whitfield stripped a Falcons' defender of the puck at the blue line. Going in on a breakaway, Whitfield roofed a beautiful shot past Dainton to give the P-Bruins a 3-0 lead going into the first intermission.
Providence's forwards completely unleashed on Springfield in the second period. Just one minute into the second frame, Kyle MacKinnon caused a turnover at Springfield's blue line and threw a shot at net, beating a surprised Dainton. Calle Ridderwall and Zach Hamill assisted on the play that gave the P-Bruins a 4-0 lead. Following the goal, Dainton was relieved by Mike Clemente. The Falcons attempted to fight back with a tally from Nick Drazenovic at 9:51, but four minutes later MacDonald answered with his second of the night to retake a four-goal lead going into the final frame.
The teams exchanged scoring opportunities throughout the third period. However, solid goaltending on both ends as well as some bad bounce kept both squads off the board. The P-Bruins defense and goaltending was flawless as the club held on for the 5-1 victory.
Hutchinson earned the win, stopping 43 of Springfield's 44 attempts. Dainton allowed four goals on five shots and suffered the loss. He was relieved by Clemente at 1:00 of the second period, who blocked 12 of 13 shots faced in 38:47 of play.
