Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins, in their 17th season in the American Hockey League, announced that they have signed defensemen Derick Martin and Brett Motherwell to Professional Tryout Agreements. With the moves, Providence has 25 players on its roster, including 14 forwards, nine defensemen and two goaltenders.
Martin, 26, is in his fifth professional season after beginning the year with the ECHL's Alaska Aces. At the time of his promotion, the ECHL season had not started. Martin spent time in the P-Bruins' training camp this year, earning one assist and a plus-two rating in two preseason games. In 2007-08, the blue-liner suited up for three different teams, including the Peoria Rivermen, Alaska and Strasbourg in France. Martin has also spent time with the Lubbock Cotton Kings in the Central Hockey League and the ECHL's Long Beach Ice Dogs, Columbia Inferno and Texas Wildcatters. As a pro in North America, Martin has 80 points (17g, 63a) and 218 penalty minutes in 223 games. Prior, the undrafted native of Timmins, Ontario, played for the St. Mary's University Cardinals and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's Hull Olympiques.
Motherwell, 22, is in his second season after a rookie year also split among three clubs. The blue-liner appeared in one collegiate game for the Boston College Eagles before going pro and playing for both the Syracuse Crunch and the ECHL's Elmira Jackals. Motherwell spent the bulk of the season with Syracuse, dressing in 48 regular season games while totaling 16 points (2g, 14a) and 59 PIM, in addition to registering two assists in 13 playoff games. He added two games for Elmira. Undrafted, Motherwell played parts of three seasons for the Eagles, earning 51 points (7g, 44a) in 82 contests.
