Owlz ride strong arms to 5-1 win
September 7, 2006 - Pioneer League (PL)
Northern Colorado Owlz News Release
Per usual, the Owlz received a dominate pitching performance en route to a 5-1 victory in front of a capacity crowd of 5,322 Wednesday evening in Orem.
The Owlz scored single runs in five different innings. The first came in the second when Scott Knazek delivered a one out RBI single to right center giving his team an early 1-0 lead.
The very next inning, Peter Bourjos laced a belt high 2-0 fastball deep over the left field wall for his fifth homer in 2006.
Two innings later, Chris Pettit knocked in run number three while reaching second base for his league-leading 24th double.
Jeremy Haynes tied his season high by striking out eight men over four innings of work. Despite not giving up a run, he left early due to a high 81 pitch count.
The only run the Rockies scored came in the top of the sixth on a Logan Wiens double, scoring David Christensen from third. That cut the Owlz lead down to 3-1.
Darrell Sales knocked in the final two runs for the home team. With the bases loaded in the sixth, he grounded into a force out, scoring P.J. Phillips from third.
Then, in the eighth, Sales tripled off the right field wall. Ryan Mount came in all the way from first on the play to give the Owlz the 5-1 advantage they would hang on to win by.
Owlz reliever Aaron Cook would set down the final nine Casper Rockies in order over the final three innings of the ballgame to preserve the win.
The two teams will square off tomorrow in the final game of the regular season at 6:05 P.M.
Following the contest, Orem heads to Idaho Falls for the first game of the Divisional Series on Friday at 7:15 P.M.
